Synopsis
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this book - and let me tell you I was NOT prepared for the meaningful and positive life lessons it displayed. This was my very first translated book and I am craving so much more from this author. I think I’ll try picking up other books by Michiko Aoyama if they are anywhere as good as this one!
Sayuri Komachi knows each book in her library like the back of her hand. She also happens to know just what her customers are in need of - especially when they don’t know themselves. For each person who walks into the library, Komachi provides them with the titles they are looking for as well as a seemingly random book title and a “special gift.”
A mother who recently lost her job, a young man ready to give up his dream, an elderly gentleman navigating his newly retired life - there are so many feel-good stories for any reader to relate to. The magic of libraries and the true gift of one’s future are so heartwarming in this charming collection of tales.
“You may say that it was the book, but it’s how you read a book that is most valuable, rather than any power it might have itself.”
Favorites
Every single character had their own unique quirks and relatable feelings or worries. I found such comfort and understanding within each of their stories and dreams. I also really enjoyed the writing style - it was easy to read and felt like a conversation between reader and writer. Each story had it’s own hint of sarcasm or comedic relief that really uplifted some of the more emotional pieces.
“Singles are envious of those who are married, and married couples envy those with children, but people with children are envious of singles. It’s an endless merry-go-round. But isn’t that funny? That each person should be chasing the tail of the person in front of them, when no one is coming first or last. In other words, when it comes to happiness nothing is better or worse – there is no definitive state.”
Final Thoughts
I absolutely loved the magic within these pages and adored the message behind this book. I even admired the repetition of each chapter - regardless of their struggles, each character became aware that everything, despite their struggles, will be okay. I haven’t read anything like it and yearn for something similar.
“As long as you continue to say the words “one day”, the dream is not over.”
