This book was purely magic. I absolutely devoured it in such short time - I simply could not get enough. This was another of my “January in Japan” selections and, once again, absolutely fell in love with the book. I adore cats, books, and so it appears, Japanese fiction!

Synopsis

A hidden, and quite unique, facility can only be found by word of mouth - it’s address made up of only street names and corners. Should one find themselves within the clinic, they’ll find a peculiar doctor who prescribes cats as treatment! With little explanation, patients come and go with their prescriptions, finding quite amazing results! This book follows multiple stories of patients and their cats, slowly unraveling the magic within the Nakagyō Kokoro Clinic for the Soul.

Reading at night with Minecraft long-play videos in the background is my current obsession!

You know the old saying: ‘A cat a day keeps the doctor away.’ Cats are more effective than any other medicine out there.

Favorites

I absolutely LOVED the concept of intertwined short stories. Each character was so unique, yet they found themselves in the same place being affected by the same strange magic. Every story provided a little more information about the strange clinic and the two within it. I felt truly surprised by the end and yet so satisfied with the full-circle writing style.

I also enjoyed that each cat had a different personality and story. For those who have never owned pets, an animal may just be an animal. To those who have grown fond of a pet, they can assure you that their personalities are VERY real. It was nice to see this in so many different ways within the same book.

The amount of time you spent together probably matters, but less time doesn’t mean less love. Whether it’s a day or a year, human or cat, and even if we may never see them again, there are those who are irreplaceable in our lives

Final Thoughts

This was the final book of my monthly Japanese translations challenge, and I was surprisingly pleased with each of them. I feel that this one might have been my favorite - it contained so many different tales in so many different ways. Some of the characters were funny, some of them were incredibly rude, and others were simply lost. Each personality found love and comfort within the cats they were prescribed and I felt as though I read multiple happy endings in one, never mind the LOVELY and magical ending of the entire book. Please give this one a read - it really is such a positive collection of stories.

It must be nice to be a cat with not a care in the world
