Synopsis

My mother gifted this book to me and I blew through it in one sitting! This is one of the books that got me back into reading and I have recommended it so many people since. It goes a little something like this: Rachel Klein drops her daughter off at school before getting a phone call from an unknown number. They inform her that they have taken Kylie, her daughter, and will not let her go alive unless Rachel follows their exact instructions. Rachel is to pay a large ransom, find another child to kidnap, and request the same of their parents in order to keep “the chain” going.

Number one: you are not the first and you will certainly not be the last. Number two: remember, it’s not about the money—it’s about The Chain.

Favorites

The plot of this book is SO unique and SOOOO well written. From the very first chapter I was so engaged in Rachel’s course of action after receiving the initial phone call. Her desperation is felt throughout the entire book - she is always doing her best to stay strong and keep it together for her daughter but you can feel her on the brink of a breakdown. I also love multiple POVs and felt that it was done so well in this book. Kylie is so much like her mother and it’s amazing to see her plotting her escape in the same way her mother is planning her rescue.

Ideally, the business and the personal should never mix, but with human beings there’s always going to be some blurring of the lines.

Icks

The one and only thing I didn’t necessarily love about this story was the connection between Rachel and her ex-husband’s brother. I loved them as a duo working to save Kylie, however I was not about their relationship as it felt too unrealistic. I definitely craved for a little more in the end - the first half was so fast-paced and intriguing while the second half seemed to slow a bit.

Life is fragile, fleeting and precious.
And to live at all is miracle enough.

Final Thoughts

If you are into thrillers or looking for a good thriller to get started, I cannot recommend this book enough! Fast-paced, anxiety-provoking, driven main characters, unique storyline - this book has it all. I will continue to gift this book to each of my friends and highly recommend giving it a try!
