Synopsis

Of course I had to read It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover before I saw the movie in theaters! Lily Bloom defies all odds, leaving her dark past in Maine to open up her dream flower shop in Boston. Everything seems to be falling into place as she hits it off with a handsome neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid. While navigating their new relationship, Lily can’t seem to escape the man of her past, Atlas Corrigan.

There is no such thing as bad people. We’re all just people who sometimes do bad things.

I absolutely adored Marshall and Alyssa! They were such good friends to Lily and I loved watching them interact. I honestly liked Alyssa’s meeting with Lily over her and Ryle’s - from the very first moment, I knew I was going to love her. Marshall simply stole the spotlight every time he was mentioned. He is a darling husband to Alyssa, supporting her independence and friendships. He truly stole my heart each time he stuck up for Lily, whether it was a head nod, a simple comment, or a glare towards Ryle. These two made the entire book for me and I was so excited to see them on the screen!

I did appreciate the way Lily was portrayed when it came to being “stuck” in the vicious cycle with Ryle. It is truly so difficult to remove yourself from a situation like that and I loved that Colleen Hoover made Lily’s situation relatable in that way. For those on the outside, like Alyssa and Atlas, it can be so heartbreaking to witness someone you care about continuously being mistreated. However, many don’t know how emotional and tolling it is to BE the one getting mistreated by someone you love. It is so true that for every bad thing they do, your heart calls to every great thing about the and hopes for change. Many novels will leave out this heartbreak or overlook the abuse to keep the main character in a positive light. I truly respect Colleen Hoover for bringing such a heavy topic into her storyline and handling it so well.

He pulls back to look down at me and when he sees my tears, he brings his hands up to my cheeks. “In the future... if by some miracle you ever find yourself in the position to fall in love again... fall in love with me.

I hated Ryle, I really was not fond of him the second he hit her but that’s my outside perspective. As someone who has been in a similar situation, I get it. But I just completely lost any attraction to him. The love-bombing and the manipulation really hit too close to home and I had a hard time getting through it all.

I’m sorry but I HATE an unexpected pregnancy trope. Oh, it is my absolute least favorite trope out there and I was so upset once I realized. I know this was important so that Lily could realize she wouldn’t want the same for her daughter and finally break it off with Ryle, but I selfishly wish for my own enjoyment it went any other way.

It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this was a pretty good read and I was happy with the movie adaptation as well! I have only read one other Colleen Hoover book, All Your Perfects, and think I liked it better, but regardless I’m really looking forward to the rest of Lily’s story in the next book!
