synopsis
How fitting for my last summer book to have been Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan! I took this one with me everywhere, I could NOT put it down. It traveled from my bed all the way to the office, and outside while my boyfriend worked on his truck - you get the jest. Summer Romance is about a newly divorced mother of three, who recently lost her own mother, and is having a hard time getting her life back together. Ali is a professional organizer, so she really needs to get it together. The first time she steps out of the house with “socially acceptable” clothes on she meets someone! Well, more like her dog peed on the leg of an extremely handsome man in the park … and he liked it (or maybe it was Ali he liked.) Will a summer fling add to Ali’s mess or could it be just the thing she needs to get back on track?
“You can’t just keep doing what you’re doing and wait for it to turn into something happy. You kind of have to look for the happy things along the way.”
Favorites
This book was everything I craved in a summer read! Ali is probably one of the more relatable characters I’ve read about recently - she’s messy, she’s imperfect, she’s merely trying to get through the day. Girl, I relate! She’s an amazing mother and reminds me of my own mom. I passed this book off to her, actually, hoping that she would feel as touched by this story as I was. It made me so happy to read about a single-mom who was able to put herself first in many ways while still being such a great parent to her kids.
“He listens to me in a way that makes me want to share everything.”
Icks
I really have nothing to complain about in this book! It was truly a fantastic summer read and I absolutely adore the cover art! I started off a bit annoyed at Ali’s daughter for being a total grump, but ended up really enjoying how Ali managed the emotions of a teenage girl without suffocating their mother-daughter relationship. Again, this reminded me a lot of my mom growing up and it felt really nostalgic.
“You get a dog and you know two things - you’re going to fall in love with it and it’s going to die one day. You knowingly walk headfirst into a heartbreak. That’s the basic madness of dog ownership.”
Final Thoughs
At this point, I’m wondering if these romance books are that good or if I’m just easily entertained. LOL! I could rave about this book and its adorable storyline for ages. Each character was so loveable - it truly was a feel-good romance with the perfect touch of comedy. Annabel Monaghan has certainly gained a fan here!
